Forty Years of Flying Together

This year marks not only a 40th birthday for Manitoba Habitat Conservancy, but another milestone worth celebrating across the continent: the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) turns 40, too. Since its signing in 1986, NAWMP has stood as one of the most ambitious and successful conservation partnerships ever undertaken, a trinational commitment between Canada, Mexico and the United States to protect, restore, and manage the wetland and upland habitats that North America’s waterfowl populations depend on. Four decades later, the plan’s legacy is measured in millions of acres of protected habitat, recovered bird populations, and the countless partnerships it has inspired between governments, conservation organizations, and private landowners from the prairies to the coasts.

As an organization that has spent 40 years of its own working to protect Manitoba’s wetlands, grasslands, and the landscapes that waterfowl and so many other species call home, we understand firsthand what NAWMP’s vision has made possible on the ground. To mark the occasion, MHC was honoured to contribute to a special 40th anniversary celebration video, collaborating with directors and conservation leaders from across the continent to tell the story of what four decades of shared commitment to waterfowl and habitat have meant. Watch the video above and join us in raising a glass, or wing, to forty more.
